We, at Manav Rachna International School, believe in collaborative learning. As a part of which, a Skype session in the classroom was arranged for the Students of MRIS- Ludhiana in which they virtually traveled thousands of miles to learn. Learning through Skype is live learning which we cannot get from textbooks or newspaper articles. Moreover, we can foster connections, relationships, interactions with others, outside our comfort zone which leads us to become global citizens.
A session with two guest speakers:
Ms. Charolet Obra from England, a real life marine Biologist working with Wise Oceans Canada, talked to the students about marine awareness and life under the sea. The students were so engaged throughout the entire session and almost didn’t want to let her go! They loved the visuals and animations of all the aquatic animals and also enjoyed Charolet’s work with coral reefs. This was an incredibly valuable learning experience that surely helped the children explore, discuss and learn about marine conservation and its impact on our lives. Charolet’s talk provided an opportunity not just to enhance the children’s knowledge in Science and Social Studies but an opportunity to examine globalization and India’s place around the globe.
Mr. Kevin Sylvester, another expert in the session, a Canadian writer and cartoonist who has illustrated a number of bestselling children books such as Neil Flambé Capers. He has been nominated for various awards like Blue Spruce Award, Silver Birch Award and Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. He had a conversation with students about writing books and also read them his book named ‘Super Dupre Monster Viewer’ which was a picture story book. The children loved the way he made it so hilarious and interesting at the same time. He also taught them tact to make cartoons and showed them their studio in which he works. After the Skype call ended, the Computer Science facilitator concluded the session by discussing with the students their learnings. She helped the Students depict their imagination through cartoon using MS Paint.
